Blacksburg, Virginia – Slick road conditions are expected to impact the morning commute today and again Tuesday morning across southwest Virginia, particularly near major travel corridors.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, temperatures will rise above freezing during the daytime today, allowing snow and ice to melt in parts of the foothills and Piedmont. However, overnight temperatures will drop back below freezing, causing melted moisture to refreeze and create black ice on roadways.
The agency warns that slick roads will be a concern this morning and again Tuesday morning, especially on bridges, overpasses, parking lots, sidewalks, and secondary roads. Motorists traveling along Interstate 81, US-460, I-581, and nearby routes should expect hazardous spots that may be difficult to see.
On Tuesday, high temperatures are forecast to reach the mid-30s to mid-40s, which is above freezing for much of the region. Despite the warmer daytime temperatures, forecasters emphasize that dropping temperatures Tuesday night will once again increase the risk of refreezing and slippery conditions by early Wednesday.
The National Weather Service advises drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and check road conditions before heading out. Those traveling longer distances are encouraged to carry an emergency supply kit in their vehicle in case of delays.
Early-morning commuters, students, healthcare workers, and shift employees may be most affected by the timing of refreeze conditions, particularly before sunrise when pavement temperatures remain cold.
Residents should continue to monitor local forecasts and roadway updates, as even small temperature changes can significantly affect driving conditions during freeze-thaw cycles.
