Blacksburg, VA – A frigid and blustery Veterans Day continues across western Virginia, with lingering upslope snow showers in the mountains and dangerously cold wind chills early Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg.
Forecasters say wind chills have dipped to near zero in higher elevations west of the Blue Ridge, while valley locations are starting the day in the 20s and 30s. Gusts of 20–35 mph will continue through the morning, making it feel much colder despite sunny breaks later in the day.
“Cold and windy conditions will persist through the day, with highs only in the 30s and 40s,” the NWS said, noting that skies will gradually clear this afternoon as dry air pushes in from the west.
While temperatures will remain below normal, winds will turn southwesterly tonight, helping readings recover to near seasonal levels by Wednesday. However, forecasters warn that very dry air combined with strong winds may elevate fire danger through midweek.
Travelers in the mountains should watch for slick spots early today from residual snow and ice.
