Blacksburg, Virginia – Snow, strong winds, and dangerous cold will continue to impact southwest Virginia through Sunday morning, creating hazardous travel conditions and increasing the risk of power outages across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, snow will persist through this afternoon before tapering off tonight. The highest snowfall totals are expected west of Interstate 77 and south of the Virginia–North Carolina border, where 4 to 6 inches of snow are possible. Areas along U.S. Route 460 and Interstate 81 may see lower totals but still experience slick and snow-covered roadways.

Snow is expected to end by early Sunday morning, but conditions may worsen overnight as northwest winds increase. Gusts could reach up to 60 mph along the southern Blue Ridge, particularly at higher elevations. These strong winds may blow down tree branches, cause isolated power outages, and make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles.

Blowing and drifting snow is expected late tonight into Sunday, potentially reducing visibility, especially in open areas and along ridgelines. Untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses are likely to remain slick into Sunday morning.

At the same time, Arctic air moving into the region will bring extreme cold. Forecasters say the lowest wind chills are expected Sunday morning, dropping to around 20 degrees below zero in the mountains and near 10 degrees below zero in the Piedmont. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in a short period under these conditions.

Residents are urged to limit travel if possible, slow down on snow-covered roads, and prepare for rapidly changing conditions. The National Weather Service also recommends dressing in layers, limiting time outdoors, and bringing pets indoors. Extra caution is advised for those traveling overnight or early Sunday along I-81, I-77, and US-460.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Sunday as winds weaken, but lingering cold will remain a concern.
