Blacksburg, VA – Forecasters are tracking a developing winter system expected to bring light snow to the region beginning late Thursday night and continuing into Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, quiet and cool weather will hold through Thursday before snow spreads into the North Carolina mountains, then moves north into southwest Virginia and parts of West Virginia overnight.

Accumulations are forecast to remain light, generally between 0.5 and 1.5 inches, though locally higher totals are possible across the North Carolina highlands. Snowfall may begin before sunrise Friday, creating slick roads and reduced visibility for the morning commute.

Meteorologists noted that forecast confidence remains moderate, with totals dependent on the exact track of the low-pressure system and how much moisture accompanies it. Any shift in the storm’s path could increase or decrease totals in parts of southwest and central Virginia.

By late Friday, snow is expected to transition to a mix of rain or freezing drizzle, especially across lower elevations and valley areas. Temperatures will remain below normal through Friday, hovering in the 30s to low 40s during the day.

Residents across Blacksburg, Roanoke, Lynchburg, and Bluefield should prepare for potentially slick spots during the early hours Friday and allow extra travel time. Road crews are expected to monitor conditions closely, but untreated surfaces may become icy, particularly on bridges and shaded areas.

Forecasters advise staying tuned for updated snowfall estimates and timing as the system approaches Thursday evening.
