Roanoke, Virginia – Severe storms could slam central and southwest Virginia as early as 2 p.m. Wednesday, bringing the risk of damaging wind gusts, flash flooding, and intense lightning that may disrupt travel and utilities through midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, an upper-level disturbance will drive widespread thunderstorms eastward into the Piedmont region late this afternoon and evening. A Level 2 risk area includes Roanoke, Lynchburg, and Danville, where wind gusts over 60 mph are possible. While hail is less likely, heavy rainfall of 1 to 2 inches — with locally higher amounts — is expected, particularly along and east of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Flash flooding is a major concern due to already saturated ground from recent rainfall. Communities like Martinsville, Wytheville, and Lexington could see ponding on roads and rising creek levels. Emergency managers advise avoiding low-lying areas and preparing for rapid changes in weather conditions.

The heaviest storms may carry frequent, dangerous lightning and short bursts of intense rain. Power outages and tree damage are possible in affected counties.

Storm threats will continue into the overnight hours. Residents should remain weather-aware, with additional alerts likely through early Thursday.
