According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, storms will develop this afternoon and linger into the late evening hours. Rainfall rates may be high enough to quickly overwhelm storm drains, particularly in low-lying and poor-drainage areas. Temperatures will top out in the mid-70s to mid-80s before settling into the 60s overnight.
Communities including Roanoke, Christiansburg, and Galax could see repeated rounds of storms, increasing the risk for flash flooding along creeks, streams, and urban streets. Drivers are urged to avoid water-covered roads, as even shallow flooding can sweep vehicles off the pavement. Outdoor events may be delayed or canceled due to lightning threats.
