Blacksburg, Virginia – Heavier rain is soaking the Piedmont and areas east of the Blue Ridge today, with roads in Southside Virginia and northwestern North Carolina likely to see ponding and slick conditions through the evening.
The National Weather Service in Blacksburg reports a disturbance riding over a wedge of cool air will push the heaviest rainfall—around one inch—across these communities, while areas west of the Blue Ridge stay drier and breezier. According to NWS forecasters, rain totals will range from a half to a full inch, particularly in Martinsville, Danville, Reidsville, and Lynchburg, while Roanoke and Galax see lighter amounts.
Motorists should prepare for slower commutes, especially along U.S. Route 29 and Highway 58, as standing water and visibility drop with the steady showers. Creeks and low-lying roads east of the mountains could temporarily flood, and scattered power outages can’t be ruled out if a heavier band develops.
The weather should gradually turn drier late tonight west of the Blue Ridge, but wet roads may linger into early Thursday. Another round of advisories is possible if rainfall intensity increases this evening.
