Blacksburg, VA — A noticeable change in the weather pattern is expected across the Blacksburg area this weekend, as a dry cold front ushers in cooler air just days before Christmas.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Saturday, December 20, will remain pleasant with sunny skies across southwest Virginia. High temperatures in the mountains, including the Blacksburg area, are forecast to range from the mid-40s to mid-50s, while the Piedmont region warms to around 50 to the lower 50s.
Conditions begin to shift on Sunday, when a dry cold front moves through the region. While no precipitation is expected, the front will bring cooler temperatures to the mountains, with highs dropping into the upper 30s to upper 40s. The Piedmont will remain milder Sunday, with highs still reaching the lower to upper 50s, creating a noticeable temperature contrast across the region.
By Monday, cooler air settles in more fully as high pressure builds, allowing the Piedmont to cool as well. High temperatures on Monday are expected to range from the upper 30s to upper 40s in the mountains, and the lower to upper 40s across the Piedmont. Skies will turn mostly cloudy, reinforcing the cooler feel.
Forecasters note that while temperatures will trend downward, conditions will stay dry and calm, with no snow or wintry precipitation expected during this period. The arrival of cooler air marks a more seasonal pattern as the calendar approaches Christmas week.
The National Weather Service says this type of dry cold front is common in late December, often bringing cooler air without the complications of winter storms. Travel conditions across southwest Virginia should remain favorable through the weekend.
Residents are encouraged to enjoy Saturday’s sunshine, then plan for cooler layers beginning Sunday, especially during morning and evening hours.
