Blacksburg, VA – The National Weather Service in Blacksburg is warning of strong winds and blowing snow across the Virginia mountains tonight, creating potentially dangerous travel conditions through early Thursday morning.

Forecasters say wind gusts between 35 and 50 mph are expected across much of southwest and central Virginia, particularly in higher elevations and exposed areas. These strong winds, combined with ongoing snowfall, will produce snow drifts and blowing snow, significantly reducing visibility for drivers.

The NWS advises motorists to use extreme caution if travel is unavoidable overnight or during the Thursday morning commute. Slick roads, reduced visibility, and drifting snow may make travel treacherous, especially on mountain passes and rural roads.

According to the latest forecast map, the strongest gusts are expected in areas such as Bluefield, Bland, Wytheville, Pulaski, and Roanoke, where winds could reach near 50 mph. Locations farther east, including Martinsville, Danville, and South Boston, may see gusts between 20 and 30 mph.

In addition to travel impacts, the NWS notes that the strong winds could knock down tree branches and cause isolated power outages, particularly in areas where snow has accumulated on trees and power lines.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve Thursday afternoon as winds diminish and snow showers taper off.
