Blacksburg, VA – A refreshing shift in the air has taken hold across southwest Virginia today, bringing crisp, dry conditions more reminiscent of late September than early September. Daytime highs are struggling to break into the 70s in several locations, offering residents a rare late-summer cool down.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a high-pressure system is funneling dry, cooler air from the north, suppressing temperatures by as much as 6 to 8 degrees below seasonal averages. Cities like Roanoke, Blacksburg, and Wytheville are topping out near 73°F, while Danville may reach 80°F before sunset.

The cool-down spans a wide stretch of the region, from Boone and Mount Airy up through Lynchburg and Lewisburg. Areas along I-81 are particularly feeling the drop, with calm winds and low humidity offering an early taste of autumn. No rain is expected, and skies will remain mostly clear through the evening.

Residents are advised to enjoy the milder weather while it lasts—temperatures are expected to gradually warm by midweek. No active watches or warnings are in place, but updates will continue from the Blacksburg Weather Office.
