Blacksburg, VA – Flood-prone communities across central and west-central Virginia face a heightened risk of flash flooding tonight as slow-moving thunderstorms bring torrential rain to the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Flood Watch remains in effect from 8 p.m. Thursday until late tonight for Botetourt, Rockbridge, Bedford, Amherst, Campbell, Appomattox, and Buckingham counties. Forecasters warn that already saturated ground could quickly lead to dangerous runoff, causing creeks, rivers, and low-lying roads to flood with little notice.

Drivers on Route 460 near Bedford and US-29 in Lynchburg should be ready for road closures or detours, especially after dark. Neighborhoods near the James River in Lexington and flood-prone sections of Appomattox and Buckingham may see water rise rapidly if heavy rain persists. Emergency management officials urge residents to avoid driving through standing water, monitor local alerts, and be prepared to move to higher ground if conditions worsen.

With this round of storms hitting an area that has already seen repeated rainfall this week, flash flooding may occur faster than usual. Residents should charge phones, gather essentials, and keep a close eye on weather alerts as conditions could change quickly.

The Flood Watch is set to expire early Friday, but further warnings may be issued overnight if rainfall rates intensify.
