Blacksburg, VA – Residents across Blacksburg and the New River Valley should prepare for the coldest air of the season Sunday as an arctic front sweeps through the region, bringing sharply falling temperatures and dangerously low wind chills.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a powerful surge of arctic air will move in behind a cold front Sunday morning. Temperatures are expected to fall throughout the day instead of rising, with the coldest conditions arriving Sunday evening and overnight.

Forecast data shows wind chill values dropping to -5 to -15 degrees west of the Blue Ridge, including parts of southwest Virginia, while areas farther east could see wind chills fall into the single digits. Gusty northwest winds will combine with bitter cold air to increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia for anyone outdoors for extended periods.

The National Weather Service says this will likely be the coldest wind chill event so far this winter season. Outdoor activities should be limited, and residents are urged to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and ensure pets are brought indoors.

Travel conditions could also be affected as the rapid temperature drop may cause refreezing on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses Sunday night. Drivers should use caution, especially in higher elevations and shaded areas.

The arctic air mass is expected to linger into early Monday before slowly moderating. Officials recommend checking on vulnerable neighbors, ensuring home heating systems are functioning properly, and taking precautions to protect pipes from freezing.
