Blacksburg, VA – Residents across the New River Valley and surrounding mountain communities are waking up to dangerously cold conditions Monday morning, with wind chills plunging well below zero in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Monday morning, December 15, is bringing subzero wind chills to the higher elevations, while parts of the Piedmont are experiencing single-digit wind chill values. In Blacksburg, wind chills early Monday dropped to around -5 degrees, making it feel far colder than actual air temperatures.

Nearby mountain communities such as Bluefield, Boone, and Wytheville are also seeing wind chills below zero, while cities farther east including Roanoke, Lynchburg, and Danville are reporting wind chills ranging from the single digits to low teens. Forecasters say cold northwest winds are the primary factor driving the dangerous conditions.

The coldest period is expected during the early morning hours, with gradual improvement later in the day as winds weaken and temperatures slowly rise. Even so, conditions will remain cold through much of Monday, especially in shaded and elevated areas.

Officials urge residents to bundle up when heading outdoors, wearing layers, hats, gloves, and covering exposed skin to reduce the risk of frostbite. Prolonged exposure in subzero wind chills can lead to frostbite in as little as 30 minutes.

Drivers are advised to keep emergency supplies in their vehicles, including blankets, especially when traveling through mountain roads where conditions can change quickly. Pet owners should limit outdoor time for animals and ensure adequate shelter and warmth.

A warming trend is expected to develop later this week, but until then, residents across southwest and central Virginia are encouraged to remain cautious and monitor local weather updates as bitter cold lingers to start the week.
