Blacksburg, Virginia – Arctic air remains firmly in place across the region today, keeping temperatures well below normal before a gradual warm-up arrives Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the cold air mass settled in behind a strong cold front that moved through the area on Tuesday. As a result, daytime temperatures today are expected to struggle to reach the mid-20s to low 30s across the mountains, including Blacksburg. Areas east of the mountains, including the foothills and Piedmont, are forecast to reach slightly milder readings in the mid to upper 30s.

Despite the cold temperatures, no significant precipitation is expected today. Skies will vary between partly cloudy and mostly clear, allowing cold air to remain entrenched through the afternoon. Winds are expected to be light, but the cold will still be noticeable for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

Conditions begin to improve Wednesday as temperatures rebound closer to seasonal averages. Forecasters expect highs in Blacksburg and nearby mountain communities to climb into the mid to upper 30s, while lower elevations warm more efficiently, reaching the mid to upper 40s by the afternoon. The warming trend is driven by moderating air moving in behind the departing Arctic system.

Overnight lows tonight will remain cold, especially in sheltered valleys, before temperatures recover during the day Wednesday. No hazardous weather is currently anticipated during the warming trend.

For commuters, students, and workers heading out early, the cold start may require extra layers this morning, but improving afternoon temperatures Wednesday should make travel and outdoor plans more comfortable across southwest Virginia.
