Blacksburg, VA – A winter storm is bringing widespread accumulating snowfall across the lower Mid-Atlantic this morning, with 3 to 6 inches expected for much of southwest Virginia, according to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg. Some mountain areas and locations along the Highway 460 corridor from Roanoke eastward may see locally higher totals where heavier snow bands develop.
According to forecasters, snowfall will continue through the morning and afternoon before tapering off between 5 PM and 8 PM, moving west to east. Roads—especially those not yet treated—are expected to become snow-covered and slick, creating hazardous travel conditions for commuters and midday drivers.
Snowfall rates could briefly intensify, leading to rapid accumulation on roadways. The agency also warns of the potential for localized power outages where heavier bands deposit wet snow on tree limbs and power lines.
Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect for portions of the region. Residents are urged to use caution today and allow extra travel time.
Light snow showers may linger into late evening once the main system exits.
