Blacksburg, VA – The National Weather Service in Blacksburg is warning drivers across southwest Virginia, northwest North Carolina, and southeast West Virginia to prepare for hazardous travel conditions overnight due to black ice and fog.

Forecasters say temperatures will remain at or below freezing through Saturday morning, causing any leftover moisture from melted snow to refreeze on untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks. This could lead to slick and icy travel conditions, particularly in mountain and valley areas.

The advisory area includes Roanoke, Blacksburg, Bluefield, Boone, Wilkesboro, Bedford, Lewisburg, and Lexington, along with parts of the Blue Ridge and Alleghany Highlands. In addition to icy roads, patchy fog is expected to develop overnight, potentially reducing visibility for early morning drivers.

Motorists are urged to slow down, use caution, and allow extra distance between vehicles. Conditions are expected to gradually improve by late Saturday morning as temperatures rise above freezing and fog dissipates.
