Rapid City, South Dakota – Dangerous fire conditions will grip western South Dakota through Thursday afternoon as strong winds, dry fuels, and low humidity combine to create an extreme risk of fast-spreading grassland fires. Officials are urging residents to avoid any outdoor burning as wildfire potential reaches critical levels.

According to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, northerly winds will gust up to 55 mph as a cold front sweeps through the region. Relative humidity will drop into the 20% range in the southwest, further drying already parched fuels. Temperatures will range from the lower 70s in the northwest to the lower 80s in the south.

Counties under the extreme fire danger alert include Pennington, Custer, Jackson, Fall River, and Oglala Lakota. Communities like Edgemont, Wanblee, Kyle, and Wall are all at heightened risk. The grassland fire danger index for Thursday has reached the “extreme” category, signaling that any spark could lead to rapid, unpredictable fire spread.

Fire behavior today may become erratic and dangerous. Authorities strongly advise against open flames, grilling, or the use of any equipment that could emit sparks. Residents should keep emergency plans in place and report smoke immediately.

Fire danger remains elevated on Friday, with conditions expected to remain in the “high” to “very high” category.
