Bismarck, N.D. – North Dakota residents should brace for powerful winds Thursday as gusts approach 55 mph across much of the state, raising concerns for travel and outdoor safety.
According to the National Weather Service in Bismarck, a wind advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday for western and central counties, including Bismarck, Minot, Dickinson, Williston, and Jamestown. Sustained northwest winds of 35 mph are expected, with peak gusts creating difficult driving conditions.
High-profile vehicles on I-94 and U.S. Highway 83 will be especially vulnerable, while unsecured outdoor items could be tossed around. Local officials recommend residents secure trash bins, patio furniture, and farm equipment ahead of the storm. Power interruptions are possible as tree limbs and loose debris strain utility lines.
Communities from Williston and Watford City east through Minot, Jamestown, and down to Bismarck will experience the strongest conditions. Ranchers are urged to check fencing and shelters for livestock before the winds ramp up Thursday morning.
The advisory remains in effect until Thursday night, with calmer conditions expected to return by Friday. Additional alerts may be issued if gusts intensify.
