Bishop, Calif. – The first freeze of the fall season has settled over Owens Valley tonight, bringing subfreezing temperatures that could damage plants and outdoor plumbing by early Wednesday. Lows are expected to dip into the upper 20s, marking the coldest night since spring across Bishop, Independence, and Lone Pine.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, a Freeze Warning remains in effect for Owens Valley through 8 a.m. PDT Wednesday, followed by a second warning expanding into Lincoln County, Nevada, late Wednesday night through Thursday morning. Residents in both regions should take precautions to protect tender vegetation and exposed water lines as overnight lows fall between 27 and 32 degrees.
Outdoor pipes and irrigation systems should be drained or insulated before the next freeze window begins. Gardeners are urged to cover plants or move potted varieties indoors. Pet owners should also ensure animals have access to warm shelter.
Motorists traveling along U.S. 395 in the Owens Valley and U.S. 93 near Caliente may encounter patchy frost early each morning, especially in shaded areas. Though daytime highs will rebound into the 60s, clear skies and calm winds will allow rapid cooling again after sunset.
With a broader cooldown spreading across interior California and southern Nevada, additional frost advisories may be issued later in the week as autumn conditions deepen across the desert valleys.
