Birmingham, AL – A surge of very cold air will move into Central Alabama Sunday night, bringing widespread wind chills in the teens and potentially near or below 10 degrees across northern counties, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Birmingham.

Forecasters report temperatures will fall into the teens to low 20s by early Monday, with breezy conditions driving wind chills sharply lower. According to the NWS, there is a medium to high chance that most of Central Alabama will experience wind chills below 15 degrees, and a high likelihood that counties north of Birmingham—including Hamilton, Jasper, Fayette, Gadsden, and Anniston—will see values dip to 10 degrees or colder.

Wind chills this low increase risks to exposed skin and can stress unprotected pets and plants. Officials urge residents to take cold-weather precautions: protect people, pets, plants, and pipes, especially overnight Sunday into Monday morning.

While skies will remain mostly clear, the combination of cold temperatures and northwesterly winds will make Monday morning feel significantly colder than the actual air temperature. Cities such as Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Selma, and Montgomery are forecast to feel between 12° and 17°, while areas farther south—including Clanton, Troy, and Eufaula—should see wind chills in the upper teens to around 20°.

The cold air mass is expected to moderate slightly by Monday afternoon, though temperatures will remain below seasonal averages.

Residents should check on vulnerable neighbors, ensure outdoor pets have warm shelter, and allow indoor faucets to drip overnight to prevent pipe damage.
