Severe weather is set to sweep across central and eastern Alabama overnight, bringing damaging winds up to 60 mph, heavy rain, and a risk of hail. The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Pike, Bullock, Barbour, and southern Russell counties, lasting until 3:15 a.m. Sunday. Residents along major routes, including I-85, are urged to remain cautious as high winds and heavy rainfall could create dangerous driving conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, the storms may produce localized flooding and isolated tornadoes. Spotters have been activated across central Alabama to monitor conditions as the storms progress through early Sunday morning. A hazardous weather outlook for the region also warns of ping pong ball-sized hail in some areas. Residents should seek shelter in interior rooms and stay away from windows during severe weather events.

Sunday morning will see the storms clearing by 8 a.m., followed by mostly cloudy skies and highs near 63°F. Monday brings gradual clearing and sunny skies with highs around 61°F, providing a much-needed break. As New Year’s Eve approaches, the region will see partly cloudy skies and temperatures peaking near 51°F before dropping to a low of 29°F on New Year’s Day.

Travelers and residents should remain vigilant, heed local weather alerts, and prepare for improving conditions heading into the week.
