Birmingham, Alabama – Cold mornings are becoming the main concern for drivers across Birmingham as below-normal temperatures settle in through midweek, creating early-day travel issues on area roads. While afternoons warm into the 40s and 50s under sunny skies, overnight lows dropping into the 20s are allowing moisture to refreeze before sunrise.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, the coldest temperatures are expected Tuesday morning, with lows in the low to mid-20s across Jefferson County and surrounding areas. While widespread wintry precipitation is not expected, officials warn that bridges, overpasses, and shaded roads could still develop slick spots during the morning commute.
Major routes including I-65, I-20/59, I-459, and U.S. 31 are most vulnerable during the pre-dawn hours when pavement temperatures are coldest. Drivers are urged to slow down, remain alert for black ice, and allow extra stopping distance, especially in low-lying or less-traveled areas. The risk diminishes by late morning as temperatures climb above freezing.
A warming trend begins later in the week, with rain chances returning Wednesday night into Thursday as temperatures moderate. While travel conditions improve overall, residents are encouraged to remain cautious during cold mornings until milder weather fully returns.
