Birmingham, Alabama – Dangerous heat is building across Central Alabama today, with temperatures nearing 100°F and heat index values climbing as high as 105°F in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a moderate heat risk is in place this afternoon for a wide stretch of the state, including Birmingham, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, Gadsden, Auburn, and Demopolis. Highs will reach between 90°F and 96°F, but humidity will make it feel even hotter.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat, and avoid leaving pets or children in vehicles — even briefly. Light-colored, loose-fitting clothing is recommended, and those without air conditioning are advised to seek cooler shelter during the afternoon hours. Officials also urge neighbors to check on elderly individuals and anyone without reliable cooling.

The heat risk is highest between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., especially in urban areas where pavement and concrete can trap heat. While no excessive heat warnings are in place, those who work outdoors or participate in summer activities should take frequent breaks and drink water often.

Temperatures will remain above normal through midweek, with additional advisories possible if humidity levels stay elevated.
