Birmingham, Ala. – Residents across Alabama are facing a dangerous heat wave today and into Wednesday, with heat indices pushing as high as 105°F due to sweltering humidity and temperatures in the mid to upper 90s.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a Moderate to Major Heat Risk remains in effect through Tuesday night, with the greatest danger to people without air conditioning, outdoor workers, and vulnerable populations such as the elderly and young children.

Much of central and southern Alabama—including Birmingham, Montgomery, Auburn, and Dothan—will see peak heat stress during the afternoon and early evening hours. The map shows extensive areas of red and orange, signaling severe heat stress from Tuscaloosa to Anniston and down through Enterprise.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and check on neighbors without access to cooling. Cooling centers should be utilized where available. This level of heat has caused medical emergencies in past years and should be taken seriously.

The heat risk may extend into Wednesday afternoon, with additional advisories possible if humidity levels remain high.
