Birmingham, AL – Central Alabama residents are being warned of severe weather risks Wednesday and Thursday as a cold front moves through the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham said storms could bring damaging wind gusts of up to 60 mph.
According to the NWS, a Marginal Risk (Level 1 out of 5) has been issued for both Wednesday afternoon into the night and again Thursday morning through evening. The risk zone includes Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, Anniston, and surrounding areas.
The primary concern is damaging winds, which forecasters say could topple trees, cause power outages, and create hazardous travel conditions. Thunderstorms are expected to develop Wednesday afternoon, continuing into the night before another round moves in Thursday.
Officials urge residents to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, keep access to a sturdy shelter, and monitor forecast updates closely. “Even at a Level 1 risk, strong winds can still cause problems, especially for outdoor activities, travel, and unsecured property,” NWS Birmingham noted in an update.
Communities from Gadsden to Auburn and down to Troy and Eufaula are included in the risk area. Drivers are advised to use caution during periods of heavy rain and wind.
