Birmingham, AL – Central Alabama faces a round of strong thunderstorms today, with a Level 1 (Marginal) risk issued by the National Weather Service. Storms are expected to develop this afternoon and continue through early Saturday morning, bringing damaging winds up to 60 mph and hail up to quarter-size.

According to the NWS Birmingham, storms will move west to east between 1 p.m. and 2 a.m., impacting cities including Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Montgomery, Anniston, and Eufaula. While tornadoes are not expected, forecasters urge residents to stay alert for rapidly changing conditions and monitor weather alerts throughout the evening.

Temperatures will remain mild today, with highs in the mid-70s to upper-70s and lows tonight around 60°F. However, a significant cold front will sweep through the region early next week, bringing the coldest air of the season. Many areas in central Alabama could see their first freeze Monday morning, with lows dipping into the 20s by Tuesday.

Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items, prepare for possible power outages, and protect cold-sensitive plants ahead of next week’s freeze.
