Birmingham, Alabama – Damaging winds and hail the size of tennis balls could strike parts of Central Alabama on Thursday afternoon and evening, as a marginal risk for severe storms builds across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a Level 1 of 5 severe weather risk covers the northeast quarter of Central Alabama, including Gadsden, Anniston, and portions of the Birmingham metro. Wind gusts may reach up to 60 mph, and hail large enough to cause property damage is possible. The alert was issued early Tuesday morning and may be updated as storm timing and intensity become clearer.

Areas under the risk zone include Etowah, Calhoun, St. Clair, Talladega, and Blount counties. Residents are urged to stay weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive alerts, especially between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. Thursday. Outdoor plans, including youth sports, should be reevaluated. Mobile homes and vehicles are especially vulnerable to large hail.

While the threat is currently limited in scope, strong cells may develop rapidly. Those in affected areas should identify sturdy shelter locations in advance and monitor NWS Birmingham for updates.

⚠️ Storm threats continue into Thursday night; further advisories may be issued.
