Birmingham, Alabama – Commuters across central and eastern Alabama are facing a dangerous Tuesday as heavy thunderstorms keep a Flood Watch in effect until 7 p.m. tonight, bringing flash flooding risks to Birmingham, Montgomery, Anniston, and surrounding communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, waves of intense rainfall will continue throughout Tuesday, with several inches expected in a short period of time. The hardest-hit areas include key corridors such as I-65 from Birmingham to Montgomery and U.S. Highway 280 toward Auburn, where water is already pooling on low-lying roads and urban creeks are rising quickly.
Local emergency officials urge residents to avoid driving through flooded streets or underpasses and to stay ready to move to higher ground if needed. Neighborhoods in eastern Birmingham, as well as parts of Alex City and Gadsden, should watch for sudden water rises, especially near rivers and creeks.
Rainfall intensity is expected to decrease by Wednesday morning, but standing water and debris could still slow commutes and emergency response overnight. Additional advisories may be issued if thunderstorms persist or if water levels continue to rise in flood-prone areas.
