Birmingham, Ala. – Central Alabama is wrapping up one last hot day Sunday with highs near 90 before a welcome break from the summer heat moves in early this week. Cooler air will filter in behind a series of weak cold fronts, knocking temperatures down into the low to mid-80s across much of the region through midweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, highs Monday will range from the lower 80s in Anniston, Gadsden, and Alex City to the upper 80s in Tuscaloosa and Montgomery. Overnight lows will dip into the 60s, bringing a refreshing change from recent muggy nights.
Scattered showers remain possible Sunday into Monday, particularly east of I-65, but rain chances decrease as the cooler, drier air spreads across the state. Drivers may still encounter slick roads during isolated downpours, but flooding concerns are minimal.
The cooldown won’t mark the end of summer. Forecasters note temperatures will likely climb again in September, though this week’s break should give residents some relief from persistent late-August heat.
Temperatures are expected to remain below seasonal averages through Friday, with a slow warming trend by next weekend.
