Birmingham, AL – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for parts of central Alabama, raising concerns for dangerous travel and power outages this weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, the watch is in effect from Friday evening through Sunday evening for northern and northwestern counties of central Alabama, including the Birmingham metro area. Forecast guidance indicates the potential for over 0.25 inches of ice accumulation along with up to 2 inches of snow in parts of the region.
Forecasters say major impacts are possible north of Interstate 20, where icing could make roadways extremely hazardous. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads may become slick or impassable, particularly during periods of freezing precipitation.
The National Weather Service warned that dangerous travel conditions are likely, and numerous power outages are possible if ice accumulates on trees and power lines. Travel along I-20, I-59, and U.S. Highway 31 could be significantly affected during the event.
Residents are urged to prepare now by ensuring backup heating sources are safe, charging electronic devices, and reviewing travel plans. Those who must drive are advised to closely monitor forecast updates and be prepared for rapid changes in road conditions.
While confidence is increasing in impactful winter weather, forecasters note that exact snow and ice amounts are still being refined, and additional winter weather headlines may be issued as the event approaches.
