Birmingham, AL – Much colder air is moving into Central Alabama, bringing dangerously low wind chills Thursday morning as a cold front passes through the region, according to the National Weather Service in Birmingham.

Forecasters said wind chill values will dip into the teens across much of Central Alabama, with single-digit wind chills possible in eastern and northeastern counties by early Thursday. In the Birmingham metro, wind chills are expected to fall to around 12 to 15 degrees Thursday morning.

Cities including Anniston, Gadsden, Jasper, Tuscaloosa, Clanton, and Talladega could see wind chills ranging from near 10 degrees to the upper teens, while colder pockets farther east may briefly dip as low as 10 degrees or colder.

The National Weather Service warned that wind chill values may remain below freezing for much of Thursday, increasing the risk of cold-related exposure, especially for anyone outdoors for extended periods. These conditions follow a cold frontal passage late Wednesday into early Thursday.

By Friday, conditions are expected to moderate somewhat, with afternoon wind chills climbing back into the 40s and 50s, though early morning cold will persist with lows in the lower 20s across many areas.

Residents are urged to dress in layers, wear hats and gloves, and limit prolonged outdoor exposure Thursday morning. Extra precautions should be taken for pets, elderly neighbors, and those without adequate heating. Space heaters should be used safely, and outdoor plumbing should be protected where possible.

This cold snap may be especially impactful for early-morning commuters, students waiting for buses, and outdoor workers across Central Alabama.
