Birmingham, AL – Central Alabama faces one last day of elevated shower and thunderstorm chances today before conditions begin to improve heading into the weekend. Rain could develop across much of the region this afternoon, with brief heavy downpours and lightning possible.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, highs will reach near 90 degrees in most cities, including Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, and Gadsden. Rain chances are highest from late morning into the early evening, with localized flooding possible in areas of poor drainage. By Friday, the storm threat decreases significantly, giving way to sunnier skies and slightly warmer afternoon temperatures.
Travelers should remain alert for rapidly changing conditions, especially along I-20, I-65, and U.S. 280 where wet roads may cause slower commutes. Outdoor plans should include backup shelter options due to the risk of lightning.
Storm activity is expected to taper off tonight, with lows in the low to mid-70s. The weekend looks mostly dry, though isolated showers may still develop in the afternoons. Additional updates from the NWS will be issued if storm trends change.
