Birmingham, Alabama – Light to moderate rain continues across central Alabama Wednesday morning, slowing travel along major corridors including Interstate 65 and Interstate 20/59.

According to the US National Weather Service in Birmingham, rain will persist through the morning hours before gradually tapering off during the afternoon. Cloud cover is expected to decrease later in the day as drier air moves into the region.

High temperatures are forecast to reach the low 60s to mid 70s across central Alabama. Areas south of Birmingham, including Montgomery and Troy, may see readings in the lower 70s, while northern communities such as Hamilton and Jasper are expected to remain in the low to mid 60s.

North winds between 5 and 10 mph are expected throughout the day, which may create light crosswinds on elevated roadways such as I-459 and stretches of U.S. 280.

Tonight, skies are expected to become mostly clear. Temperatures will drop significantly, with overnight lows falling into the mid 30s to mid 40s. Cooler readings are anticipated north of Birmingham, including areas near Gadsden and Anniston.

The temperature shift may be noticeable for early Thursday commuters and students waiting at bus stops, especially in outlying areas where mid-30s lows are forecast.

Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time during the morning rain, particularly on high-traffic routes including I-65, I-20/59 and U.S. 280.

No severe weather is expected at this time, according to the National Weather Service.
