Birmingham, Alabama – Bitter cold is settling across central Alabama tonight, with temperatures dropping into the teens and wind chills falling as low as 5°F, triggering a Cold Weather Advisory for the entire region through 9 a.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, dangerously cold air will impact cities including Montgomery, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Anniston, with overnight lows ranging from 10 to 18 degrees. Jasper and Hamilton could see temperatures dip to just 11°F. Wind chills between 5 and 15°F will make outdoor exposure hazardous, especially for vulnerable populations and unprotected pets.
Residents are urged to take immediate precautions: bring pets indoors, insulate exposed pipes, and avoid prolonged time outside. Local agencies also advise checking on neighbors and the elderly, especially in rural areas where infrastructure may be more vulnerable.
Clear skies and calm winds will allow for rapid cooling overnight. Tuesday brings some relief, with highs rebounding into the low to mid-40s, but the next 12 hours remain a critical window for cold-weather safety.
The advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Tuesday, with no additional warnings issued yet, though forecasters caution more cold snaps are possible later in the week.
