Birmingham, Alabama – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to continue impacting the Birmingham area today, with the greatest threat window lasting through approximately 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Birmingham.

The region remains under a Level 2 (Slight Risk) for severe weather across much of central Alabama. Forecasters say the primary threat is damaging straight-line winds, with gusts capable of reaching up to 60 mph. In addition, isolated, brief tornadoes are possible, particularly within stronger storm cells.

The storms are moving quickly, which increases the risk of trees being blown down, especially in areas that have already received heavy rainfall. Saturated ground conditions may allow even moderate wind gusts to uproot trees, potentially leading to localized power outages and blocked roadways, even outside of warned areas.

The National Weather Service indicates the most active period will occur from this morning through early afternoon, with storms gradually exiting the area later today. Rainfall may be heavy at times, but flooding is not currently the primary concern compared to wind-related impacts.

Residents are urged to remain weather-aware, keep multiple ways to receive warnings, and be prepared to seek shelter quickly if a warning is issued. Safe shelter includes an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows.

Drivers should use caution, as sudden wind gusts, heavy rain, and falling debris could make travel hazardous during storms. Outdoor activities should be postponed until storms pass.

This alert is especially relevant for morning and early-afternoon commuters, schools, businesses, and outdoor workers across the Birmingham metro area.

The National Weather Service advises closely monitoring updates throughout the day as storms move through central Alabama and conditions change rapidly.
