Birmingham, AL – Severe thunderstorms are expected across Alabama today as an upper-level low-pressure system moves through the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham has issued a marginal risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather, warning residents to prepare for potential damaging winds and large hail.

According to the NWS, storm activity will begin in western Alabama this morning, particularly west of I-65, and gradually spread eastward. By the afternoon, as temperatures rise into the upper 70s, scattered storms will develop across eastern and southeastern counties. The primary threats include wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to golf ball size. The most active period for severe storms is expected between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Meteorologists are closely monitoring storm development in northern Mississippi, which could affect western Alabama. While the risk level remains low, any storms that form could quickly intensify.

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, secure loose outdoor items, and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts. The NWS advises taking cover indoors if a severe thunderstorm warning is issued.
