Binghamton, New York – Drivers across central New York could face sudden whiteout conditions and slick roads this afternoon and evening as snow squalls combine with strong, gusty winds across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, isolated snow squalls may develop around midday, becoming more scattered by mid to late afternoon and continuing into the evening hours. These brief but intense bursts of snow can rapidly reduce visibility and cause roads to become snow-covered and slippery in a matter of minutes.

Strong winds are expected to add to the danger, with gusts increasing this afternoon and continuing into tonight. Some locations could see gusts of at least 40 mph, raising the risk of blowing snow and isolated power outages. The most hazardous travel conditions are expected between mid-afternoon and late evening.

Areas at risk include Broome, Tioga, Chenango, Cortland, Tompkins, and Delaware counties, along with major routes such as Interstate 81, Route 17, and Route 11. Even brief squalls could lead to sudden slowdowns and increased crash risk during peak travel times.

Drivers are urged to slow down immediately if visibility drops, avoid sudden braking, and be prepared to delay travel if conditions worsen. Snow squall and wind-related alerts may be issued with little notice as conditions evolve through tonight.
