Binghamton, NY – A familiar pattern repeats today across central New York as lake effect showers once again spread across the region, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton. Most areas will see rain, but snow will mix in across higher elevations south of the Mohawk Valley and in parts of the northern Catskills.

According to NWS forecasters, precipitation chances remain elevated through this evening, with most locations seeing a 70% to 90% chance of showers by late afternoon. Areas around Syracuse, Cortland, Norwich, and Ithaca will experience periods of rain, while elevated terrain may transition to a rain–snow mix as colder air filters in.

As temperatures cool into the low 30s tonight, snow showers are expected to become more widespread, especially across the eastern Finger Lakes and eastern Southern Tier. Light accumulation is possible, generally ranging from a trace to around one inch. Isolated pockets in the highest elevations could see slightly more, though impacts remain minor.

Today’s high temperatures will range from the upper 30s in the north to the mid-40s farther south, including Binghamton, Elmira, and Towanda. Breezy conditions and cloud cover will keep the region feeling damp and chilly through the afternoon.

Forecasters say lake effect activity will persist into the overnight hours before gradually tapering early Friday. No significant travel disruptions are expected, though drivers in higher elevations should remain alert for brief periods of reduced visibility and slick spots.

Residents should prepare for a colder night ahead, with patchy snow showers continuing into early Friday morning.
