Binghamton, N.Y. – Afternoon thunderstorms and 90-degree heat will linger across central and southern New York through Saturday, with a greater chance for widespread showers and storms by Sunday as a cold front approaches.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, isolated to scattered thunderstorms will pop up during peak heating hours—typically between 1 and 7 p.m.—today and Saturday. While the risk of severe weather remains low, rainfall could be heavy at times, especially in valleys and urban areas.

Highs will hover near 90°F in Syracuse, Ithaca, and Elmira today, with Bath and Binghamton also reaching the upper 80s. Rain chances increase steadily each day: from 20–30% today to more than 55% by Saturday afternoon in cities like Oneonta, Corning, and Utica. By Sunday, precipitation probabilities top 85% in much of the region, including Towanda and Cooperstown.

Residents should stay weather-aware during outdoor activities, especially in the afternoons. Keep phones charged for weather alerts, and seek shelter during thunder. Roads may become slick during sudden downpours.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to peak Sunday afternoon into the evening, with a chance for additional alerts as the front moves through.
