Binghamton, New York – Light snow is spreading across parts of central New York today, with minor accumulations expected mainly along and north of the New York State Thruway, while a larger winter storm threat continues to take shape for later this week.

Temperatures will climb into the 30s and lower 40s across the Southern Tier and central New York today, but blustery winds will make it feel colder, especially this morning. Peak wind gusts near 25 mph are expected before winds ease later tonight. Snow showers will gradually shift northward through the day and continue overnight, with the best chance for accumulation focused along and north of the I-90 corridor.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, snowfall amounts today are expected to remain light, but roads may become slick, particularly on untreated surfaces, bridges, and higher elevations. Travel along Interstate 81, Interstate 90, Route 17, and Route 88 could be impacted at times, especially during the evening and overnight hours.

This round of snow comes ahead of a more organized storm system expected midweek into late week, which could bring more widespread and impactful winter weather to New York. While details are still being refined, forecasters are monitoring the potential for heavier snow from Wednesday into Friday, Jan. 14–17, particularly across central and northern portions of the state.

Residents are encouraged to use caution while driving today and to stay alert for changing conditions later in the week. Even light snow combined with gusty winds can reduce visibility quickly, especially in open areas.

Officials advise monitoring updates from the National Weather Service and NYSDOT as the midweek system approaches. Additional advisories or winter storm alerts may be issued if confidence increases in heavier snowfall and broader impacts across central New York.
