Binghamton, NY – A strong storm system is set to impact central New York and northeast Pennsylvania tonight through Friday, bringing gusty winds, periods of heavy rain, and a transition to snow showers, according to the National Weather Service.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, above-normal temperatures are expected today, with highs in the 40s to near 50 degrees and mostly sunny skies. Conditions will begin to change later today as clouds increase ahead of the approaching system.

By this evening into overnight, strong winds and widespread rain will move into the region. Wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph are expected, with locally higher gusts possible over hills and ridge tops. A Wind Advisory is in effect for the entire area from 7 p.m. tonight through 1 a.m. Saturday.

Forecasters say locally heavy rainfall is possible overnight, and a line of gusty showers could move through between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. Friday, potentially producing brief downpours and stronger wind gusts.

As colder air moves in behind the cold front, rain will change to scattered snow showers Friday afternoon and evening, mainly across higher elevations and northern areas. While significant snow accumulation is not expected, temperatures dropping below freezing Friday night could lead to slippery spots on untreated roads, especially where rainwater freezes.

Communities potentially impacted include Binghamton, Ithaca, Elmira, Cortland, Oneonta, Norwich, and nearby areas in northeast Pennsylvania, including Scranton and Wilkes-Barre.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor objects, prepare for possible isolated power outages, and use caution during the Friday morning and evening commutes as conditions rapidly change.
