Binghamton, New York – Bitter cold will intensify across central New York overnight as light snow transitions to lake-effect snow and wind chills plunge well below zero, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters say light snow this morning will shift to lake-effect snow, especially along the I-90 corridor and around the Syracuse metro, where 1 to 3 inches of accumulation is possible. Snow showers may linger into tonight, though coverage is expected to remain scattered.
Temperatures tonight are forecast to fall to around 0 degrees, with northwest winds of 5 to 10 mph driving wind chills down to between -5 and -20 degrees. The coldest wind chills are expected overnight through early Tuesday morning, particularly across higher elevations of northeast Pennsylvania and Steuben County, where a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect.
Meteorologists warn that frostbite is possible on exposed skin within 30 minutes or less under these conditions. Roads may remain snow-covered and slippery in areas impacted by lake-effect snow bands.
The National Weather Service notes that this cold air mass will remain in place through the rest of the week, keeping temperatures well below average into next weekend.
Residents are urged to dress in layers, limit time outdoors overnight, and use caution during early morning travel, especially in higher terrain.
