BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – New Yorkers will face one more round of storms Thursday before a bright, warm fall weekend settles in. Drivers along I-81 should prepare for slick roads this morning and into the evening as showers and thunderstorms push through.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, rain chances spike to 90% Thursday, with downpours and rumbles of thunder possible into late evening. Most areas will see a quarter inch of rainfall, with localized heavier totals during storms. The unsettled weather clears out late Thursday night, giving way to sunshine by Friday.

By Saturday, skies across Broome County and the Southern Tier will be mostly clear with highs near 76. Patchy fog may briefly reduce visibility early Friday morning, but conditions improve quickly as winds shift north. Travel for weekend plans, including routes across Tioga and Chenango counties, should see smooth driving conditions.

Sunday looks just as pleasant, with highs nearing 80 and partly sunny skies. The first days of October bring more sunshine, holding temperatures in the mid to upper 70s through Tuesday. Cooler nights, dropping into the low 50s, remind residents fall has arrived, but no early frost or winter chill is expected just yet.

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware Thursday, avoid unnecessary travel during storms, and secure outdoor items ahead of gusty downpours.

Warnings may be lifted after Thursday night, but updates from the National Weather Service should be monitored as October begins.
