BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Thunderstorms are set to move across the Southern Tier beginning late tonight, bringing the potential for heavy downpours and travel disruptions through Wednesday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, showers will develop after midnight with the strongest storms expected between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. Wednesday. Rainfall could total up to half an inch, with isolated higher amounts in thunderstorms. Commuters in Broome, Tioga, and Chenango counties may encounter slick roads and reduced visibility during the Wednesday morning drive.
Winds will remain light, but locally gusty conditions are possible within stronger cells. Temperatures will hold in the upper 60s Wednesday before another round of showers and storms returns in the evening. By Thursday, drier air will arrive with clearing skies and calmer weather.
Residents are urged to charge devices ahead of time, secure outdoor items, and allow extra travel time overnight and early Wednesday. Though widespread flooding is not expected, poor drainage areas could see temporary ponding on roads.
Additional rain chances linger into the weekend, but the heaviest activity should ease after Wednesday night.
