Binghamton, NY – The US National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a High Wind Watch for much of central and upstate New York from 1 p.m. Wednesday through 1 p.m. Thursday, warning of strong winds and possible severe thunderstorms as a cold front sweeps through the region.
Forecasters say wind gusts up to 60 mph will be possible across most areas, with 20 to 30 mph sustained winds expected through Wednesday night. Higher elevations and the northern counties, including Oneida County, could see localized gusts between 15 and 25 mph early before stronger winds arrive.
The weather service also notes that isolated severe thunderstorms could develop Wednesday afternoon and evening, producing stronger gusts and brief heavy rain. Forecasters warn that, given the strong wind shear in place, an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.
Travelers and residents should secure outdoor items, avoid parking near trees or power lines, and stay alert for rapidly changing conditions through Wednesday evening. Winds are expected to ease gradually by Thursday afternoon as the front moves east.
