A faint chill hangs over the hills of Broome County this morning as low clouds drift above a still, gray horizon. It’s the kind of quiet that often precedes a change — and a major pattern shift is now underway across the Southern Tier.

After a calm start near freezing, temperatures will rise sharply into the 50s today as a southerly breeze strengthens ahead of a developing storm system. The National Weather Service in Binghamton reports that steady rain will expand through the day, with gusts up to 30 mph making it feel raw and unsettled by evening. A few heavier showers may cross I-81, reducing visibility during late-day travel.

Saturday brings a brief window of drier weather, partly sunny at times with highs near 54°F, before clouds thicken again. Another round of rain develops Saturday night into Sunday, marking the last mild stretch before a sharp cold front slams through the region. By Sunday evening, temperatures tumble into the 30s as rain mixes with — and potentially changes to — wet snow by early Monday morning.

While major accumulation isn’t expected, slick spots could develop on higher routes such as I-88 and NY-17 through the Catskills and Delaware County. Monday will feel like a true early winter preview, with highs barely reaching the low 40s and brisk northwest winds adding bite to the air.

Looking beyond, Veterans Day turns partly sunny but cold, with lows dipping into the 20s — a clear signal that November’s first real chill has arrived.
