BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Central New York will see another day of summer heat Tuesday, with temperatures climbing into the upper 80s and low 90s across much of the region. Some cities, including Elmira and Ithaca, could touch 93 degrees before sunset, making conditions well above seasonal norms.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, high pressure overhead is locking in the warmth and sunshine for one more day. Normal highs for early August typically range from 77 in Binghamton to 83 in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but readings today are running 10 to 15 degrees higher.
The heat will break early Wednesday as a cold front sweeps across the state, bringing a much-needed round of showers and possible thunderstorms. Rain is expected to begin in the morning hours, with cooler highs in the mid to upper 80s. The front will also help improve air quality and reduce fire danger after a stretch of dry weather.
Drivers should be prepared for reduced visibility during heavy downpours and wet roads during the Wednesday morning commute. Residents are encouraged to hydrate, limit strenuous activity outdoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors through the heat.
