Binghamton, N.Y. – Sweltering heat and soaring humidity will grip Upstate New York on Thursday, with temperatures climbing into the lower 90s and heat indices pushing toward the upper 90s in many counties from Binghamton to Utica.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Heat Advisory is in effect Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for a wide swath of central and northern New York, including Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Otsego, Oneida, and surrounding areas. Residents can expect highs in the mid 80s to lower 90s, but oppressive humidity will make it feel much hotter, especially during the afternoon.

Travelers along I-81 and I-88 should be prepared for heat-related delays, and local officials are urging people to limit outdoor activities, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Cooling centers may be available in larger cities such as Binghamton and Norwich.

By Friday, showers and thunderstorms could bring some relief as a cold front approaches, but the risk of locally heavy rain and isolated flash flooding remains. More advisories are possible as weather conditions evolve, with updates posted on weather.gov/bgm.
