Binghamton, NY – A blanket of haze is settling across much of Central and Southern Tier New York this week, bringing warm, mostly sunny days but murky skies and potential afternoon storms through Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, high temperatures will remain in the 80s through midweek with persistent haze caused by stagnant air and limited wind flow. While Tuesday remains dry and quiet, forecasters warn that by Wednesday and Thursday, isolated afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms could develop, especially near higher elevations and urban areas like Syracuse, Ithaca, and Elmira.
Health officials are urging sensitive groups—especially those with asthma or heart conditions—to limit prolonged outdoor activity due to reduced air quality from the haze. Visibility may also dip slightly during peak haze hours, especially in valleys and along roadways like I-81 and Route 17.
Residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity outdoors during the afternoon, and keep an eye on local alerts in case pop-up storms bring lightning or gusty winds.
The warm and hazy pattern may linger into Friday, with a potential shift toward clearer skies by the weekend. More advisories could follow if storm chances increase.
