BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — A biting fall chill gripped much of central New York Friday morning, marking the season’s first widespread freeze before dawn. The National Weather Service reported temperatures in the mid-20s to low-30s across the Southern Tier and Northeast Pennsylvania, with frost blanketing fields and rooftops before sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, the Freeze Warning will expire by 9 a.m. Friday, ending the short-lived cold snap that put tender vegetation at risk. Residents are urged to check outdoor plumbing and protect any remaining garden plants before temperatures rebound. Travel along I-81 and I-88 may see brief fog patches early, but conditions will quickly improve under mostly sunny skies.

By Saturday, southerly winds will push milder air back into the region, sending highs into the upper 60s. Moisture will build through the weekend, bringing scattered rain showers by late Saturday and steadier rainfall Sunday. The heaviest rain is expected along I-81 from Binghamton north toward Syracuse, where wet roads could slow travel late Sunday into Monday.

While this week’s freeze signaled a shift toward true fall weather, temperatures will moderate heading into next week. Farmers and homeowners can expect a stretch of milder, wetter conditions — a welcome pattern for pumpkin patches, fall markets, and leaf-viewing events ahead of Halloween season.
